Political Cartoon 4

This by far is the best cartoon I've seen in a long time. There's so much going on that I don't even know where to start. From left to right we have President Obama, then we have Sandra Fluke. Next to her we have the notorious Rush , followed by the Republican Elephant. Obama is pushing a cart that has a sign on it with the words Free Contraceptives.Sandra is standing in front of Obama who is about to giver her a thing of birth control. As Sandra is reaching in we have Rush calling her a slut and then saying it was a poor choice of words. Then we have the elephant who is dresses in attire that fit the setting of the novel "The Scarlett Letter" holding a dress with the letter A inscribed in red on it.The Elephant also states "here wear this" to Sandra.
As we know this issue is one that is fairly recent. More importantly it deals with one of the hot topics of this upcoming election- birth control. Obama is giving out the contraceptives in a rather casual manner. Rush although he is claiming to be sorry for calling Sandra a slut, he does not look apologetic at all. The elephant to me is the most important. Anyone with seem background about the Scarlett Letter will easily understand the reference and the connection being made about the elephant and the Puritan from the Scarlett Letter. The Puritans in the novel were extremely conservatives and religious. They were involved in all aspects of one's life. They punished the heroine for being pregnant out of wedlock, forced her to wear the letter A at all time, and excluded her from society. To me it seems like the republican party is slowly being associated with those Puritans because they come off as intolerant of people who do not carry the same values as them. Especially when it comes to gay rights, abortion, and birth control.
